to explore what really needs to change

The Situation

While Malaysia has introduced stricter policies (e.g. Transboundary movement of Waste regulations, and Basel convention compliance), Enforcement remains inconsistent, and illegal imports continue.

The Solution
Implement Strict Basel Convention: Malaysia should reject any non-compliant shipments and return them to origin countries.
Sign MOUs with Exporting Countries: Create formal agreements with countries like the UK, US, and Australia for better tracking of e-waste origin.
The Situation

Malaysia has become a major destination for international electronic waste (e-waste), particularly since China’s 2018 ban on foreign waste imports (the National Sword policy). As a result, global e-waste exporters redirected shipments to Southeast Asian.

The Solution
Implement Strict Licensing Criteria: Only issue licenses to facilities that meet international environmental and safety SOLUTIONS standards.
Use Digital Tracking (GPS, Blockchain): Monitor the movement and processing of imported waste from port to processing plant
The Situation

Improper handling of e-waste has caused serious air, water, and soil contamination, particularly in areas like Selangor, Penang, and Johor, affecting both communities and ecosystems.

The Solution
Conduct Surprise Audits: DOE and local councils should increase unannounced checks on recycling plants.
Stricter Punishment: Companies or agents caught in illegal activities should be banned for life and possible jail term for serious offenders.
